Ruth Elnora Frey

Ruth Elnora Frey, 97, died Wednesday, April 30, 2003. Miss Frey was born July 3, 1905 to Jacob and Florence (Amos) Frey on a farm near Derby. She attended a one-room school (Spring Hill) and Derby High School. She received a Bachelor Degree from Wichita State University (then, Fairmount College) and a Master’s Degree from WSU. For her MA Degree, she received a commendation from the Wichita Cancer Society. She taught in elementary schools in Sedgwick County and at Waco Elementary School in Wichita. She became a teacher of Health and Physical Education at East High School in Wichita and became Head of the Girls Physical Education Department at West High School when it opened in 1953. In all she devoted 42 years to teaching. Miss Frey was a lifelong devotee of nature and animals and received national recognition from the Kansas Collie Club for her contributions to the breed. She enjoyed horseback riding, reading, cooking and renovating older houses. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Wichita and enjoyed working on the Transportation Committee at the church. Miss Frey was a founding member of the Kansas Collie Club and was a member of The Collie Club of America, Recreation Area for Teachers (RAFT), Kappa Kappa Iota, Air Capital Active People and Botanica. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees at Wichita State University, Miss Ruth Frey taught in other Wichita public schools and then at West. She has taught Physical Education at West since it opened in 1953. Included in her daily activities were Health Education classes and girls after-school sports. Upon leaving West, she will continue her hobby of breeding and raising show dogs. She plans to remain active in outdoor sports, especially horseback riding. Dealing with real estate also interests her. Mainly she intends to relax and do what she wants.
