Julian Arthur McEwen was born in Stockton, Kansas on 2 Sep 1937 to Arthur Samuel and Mildred Neva (née Biery) McEwen. He was a graduate of Fort Hays State College. He taught Industrial Arts and was the gymnastics coach at Wichita West from the 1966 - 1967 school year through the 1977 - 1978 school year.

McEwen, Julian A., retired teacher at Wichita West and NW High, Auctioneer, Antique Dealer, Wichita West Lions Club member, Church and Community Volunteer, died July 31, 2005 after a 15 year battle with cancer. Survived by wife, Carol; daughters, Cindy Haynes, Joyce Webb and son James McEwen & their families; brother, Duane McEwen; sister, Virginia Hayes and their families. Celebration Gathering will be held at North West Christian Church, 10850 W. 21st N. Wichita, KS 67205, Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be sent to North West Christian Church or Association for Retarded Citizens, 2919 W. 2nd, Wichita, 67213. It is because of Julian that I have spent 50 years in the same trade. Being a tool and die maker and artist for Cherokee Ironworks all came from the encouragement of Mr. McEwen. He was a great teacher.
